The Thrill Of The Chase

BOOK REVIEW by Willard Manus

New from Getty Publications is THE THRILL OF THE CHASE, a book of 147 photographs culled from the collection of Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr. The latter, although relatively unknown outsideof photography circles, owned one of the major photography collections in the world–-a collection he eventually sold to the Getty Museum in 1984. Now the museum has paid tribute to the late Wagstaff, not only by publishing this impressive book but by mounting an exhibit of his work which will be on display at the museum until July 31, 2016, traveling after that to museums in Connecticut and Maine.

Among the famed American and European photographers whose works are represented in THE THRILL OF THE CHASE are Man Ray, Dora Maar, Peter Henry Emerson, Robert Mapplethorpe, Gustave Le Gray, Thomas Eakins and Diane Arbus, among many others.
“Sam Wagstaff was the supreme aesthete of his generation,” said American Photo upon his death in 1993. “Single-handedly, and with an unparalleled intensity, he transformed the collecting of photography in this country from an idiosyncratic indulgence into an intellectual pursuit worthy of widespread recognition.”
