TEATRO EL PUBLICO
Cuba’s Teatro El Publico will perform its latest work, ANTIGONON,
UN CONTINGENTE EPICO, at Redcat in March. A kaleidoscope of Cuban counter-cultural
society, the show combines elements of dance, spectacle, fashion, cabaret,
theater and drag in its treatment of the Antigone myth.
Crafted by the daring young director Carlos Diaz and the equally audacious playwright, Rogelio Orizondo, ANTIGNON also works a second myth, that of the Cuban hero Jose Marti, into the mix. Five highly physical performers don exotically absurd costumes at a rapid-fire pace as they guide the audience poetically and fitfully through a series of flashbacks, all set against a backdrop of archival news footage that connects the past with the present in unnerving and profound ways.
