ALONZO KING LINES BALLET: SUTRA
ALONZO KING LINES BALLET: SUTRA will be performed November 1-3, 2018 at
the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.
Masters of rhythm, vibration and movement unite in Kings most recent
collaboration with classical Indian instrumentalists, Zakir Hussain and
Sabir Khan. The former is a Grammy Award-winning tabla virtuoso who is
considered a chief architect of the contemporary world-music movement.
Vocalist and ninth-generation Sarangi master, Khan has enthralled audiences
across the globe with his rare combination of sur and laya (note and rhythm).
Combined,
the complex rhythmic systems of their music naturally partner with Kings
choreography to celebrate the long-standing continuity between transcendental
Eastern thinking and Western ballets classical forms and techniques.
King, proclaimed one of the few bona fide visionaries in the ballet
world today (San Francisco Chronicle), understands ballet as a science-founded
on universal, geometric principles of energy and evolution-and continues
to develop a new language of movement from its classical forms and techniques
that gives audiences a profound sense of shared humanity.
SUTRA premiered earlier this year at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts
in the Bay Area as part of Kings 35th anniversary celebration.
The Wallis is located at 9390 N. Santa Monica Blvd in Beverly Hills.
