of southern California's least-known blues haunts is the BONES & BLUES
CLUB, which is located in the Watts Labor Community Action Committee complex
at 10950 S. Central Ave. On the last Friday night of every month WLCAC turns
its largest room into a dimly lit nightclub which features such artists
as Maxine Weldon, Ernie Banks and Linda Hopkins. Showtimes are 9 & 11
PM; admission is $10 in advance; $15 at the door. The club serves soul food
and drinks. Call (323) 563-5639.
The WLCAC story is an inspiring one. Founded in 1964 (right after the Watts riots) by a group of labor leaders headed by Ted Watkins, WLCAC has become one of L.A.'s major community centers. In fulfilling its mission to stimulate economic change and improve the quality of life for African-American families living in south-central, the center owns and manages 500 houses, offers day care, senior citizen activities, educational programs, vocational training, art galleries and family counseling.
