Legends Of Jazz

REVIEW By Willard Manus

LRS MEDIA, LLC, a new media company founded by Lee Rosenberg, Larry Rosen and Ramsey Lewis, recently released LEGENDS OF JAZZ "SHOWCASE," the inaugural CD/DVD package based on the television series aired on PBS stations, hosted by composer/pianist Lewis. The series, the first weekly jazz show on network television in forty years--shame on you, America!--is first class in every regard. Beautifully shot in Chicago (at station WTTW11), the hour-long show features superb artists playing and singing jazz classics. On "SHOWCASE," for example, the likes of Kurt Elling, Al Jarreau, Chris Botti, Phil Woods, Jane Monheit and Lee Ritenour perform, teamed up in unusual combinations, making for fresh, exciting reworkings of such standards as Take Five, Take the A Train and Senor Blues. The CD sounds as good as the DVD looks, making this release a memorable, land-breaking event. (www.legendsofjazz.com)
