Review by Willard Maus

Justin Kauflin, co-star of the jazz documentary KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON (see Movie review, above) recently appeared at the Blue Whale jazz club in L.A. to celebrate the release of his latest album, DEDICATION (Qwest Records). Working with Evan Sherman on drums and Christopher Smith on bass, the youthful pianist electrified the crowd with his dynamic and expressive keyboard work.
Concentrating on tunes he composed for the album, Kauflin (with seeing-eye dog Candy by his side) played with fire, precision and virtuosity, showing why one jazz critic has dubbed him “the George Shearing of the 21st century.”

Kauflin is that and more. Motivated by his deeply held Christian beliefs, he pushes into spiritual dimensions that few pianists even contemplate. When you combine that kind of religiosity and purity with an innate ability to swing–well, what you’ve got is an extraordinary musician, one of the brightest stars in the jazz constellation.
