Duets

Review by Willard Maus

Kevin Eubanks and Stanley Jordan are two jazz stalwarts, masters of the guitar. They also share a similar musical sensibility and point-of-view, as evidenced by their recent Mack Avenue album, DUETS.

It’s just the two of them on this CD, complementing each other on ten tunes, playing in a quietly beautiful, delicate, life-enhancing way. In some cases they play skull arrangements of such classics as Nature Boy and Summertime, in other cases, more tightly arranged versions of tunes like Someone Like You and Lights (by Ellie Goulding).

They also show surprising sides as musicians, with Eubanks playing bass and vibes on Vibes, and Jordan essaying a long piano solo on Blue in Green, the Miles Davis composition. It would appear that these two can do no wrong, no matter what instrument they wield.

The best thing about DUET is the feel of it, the mutual respect, love and beauty emanating from it.
