Gary Meek - Originals
Review by Willard Manus

Another outstanding sax player, Gary Meek, struts his stuff on his new album ORIGINALS, on which he plays ten of his latest compositions, accompanied by Grammy Award-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, bassist Brian Bromberg and pianist Mitchel Forman. Also featured are such guest artists as Randy Brecker (trumpet), Bruce Forman (guitar), Michael Lent (guitar) and Airto Moreira (percussion). Together these stalwarts take the listener on an enjoyable trip.
Among the tracks are “Spiritual for Iris,” a soulful tribute to the wife of Meek’s spiritual mentor who suffered a grievous loss, and “Suite for Maureen,” an extended and captivating love song to Meek’s wife (the Brazilian tinge comes courtesy of Moreira).

“Mr DG,” a tune written for Don Grolnick, is a hard-driving blues over an ostinato bass line that allows the entire band to solo freely and happily.

Meek, a highly regarded sideman (with over 150 recordings to his name), proves that he can also excel as a leader. ORIGINALS captivates from beginning to end, thanks to Meek’s potent playing and writing.
