The Jazz All-Stars, Vol. 2

Review by Willard Manus

To paraphrase the TV commercial, you’re in good hands with THE JAZZ ALL STARS, VOL. 2. In this Le Coq Records release, some of America’s finest jazz musicians have combined to breathe new life into such classic tunes as “Yesterday’s,” “Freddie’s Blues” and “Doodlin’.” Produced by Piero Pata and Andy James, arranged by John Beasely, Rick Margitza and Bill Cunliffe, the all-stars include Bob Shepard, John Patitucci, Terell Stafford, Jake Langley and Chris Potter, to name just a few.

Two of the nine tracks feature vocalist Andy James, a welcome and winning presence. On the other seven tracks, the musicians are given room to stretch out; Cunliffe’s “Balinda,” for example, runs for nearly eight minutes and features exceptional work by tenorman Alex Acuna and guitarist Langley over drummer Vinnie Colaiuta’s catchy Latin beat. Almost as long and equally as engaging is “Around the Corner,” another Cunliffe composition on which two tenors (Shepard and Potter) team up with trombonist Michael Dease to generate oodles of steam heat.

Le Coq Record’s stated mission to present “honest jazz” is fulfilled here in admirable fashion. Can’t wait to see what this plucky new company will come up with in future.
