Blue Train

Review by Willard Manus

The singer Susie Blue (Solitaire Miles) and her band (The Lonesome Fellas) have put together a new album which has all the rough-hewn, raucous spirit of a Prohibition speakeasy. BLUE TRAIN features the vocal gifts of Susie Blue on sixteen tracks, a mixture of old and new favorites which she delivers in earthy fashion, putting heart and soul into each and every lyric.

She kicks things off with a rowdy interpretation of “I Wanna Rock.” That’s followed by the earthy anthems, “Big Sweet Baby” and “Lucky Lips.” Then she teams up with Dominic Halpin on an impassioned love song, “Forever Yours.” It goes on from there, with one hard-rockin’ tune following another: “Blue Train,” “How Could I Help But Love You,” and “One Way Ticket to the Blues,” to name but a few.

Backing her are nine superb musicians, led by Howard Levy (harmonica), Neal Alger (guitar), Eric Schneider (sax) and Jack Gallagher (trombone). They work well with Susie Blue, matching her straight-ahead, one-of-the-boys style with much vigor and finesse of their own.
