The Hollywood Bowl's 81st season will include one opera highlight--a concert version of Puccini's LA BOHEME, starring soprano Patricia Racette and tenor Ramon Vargas as the doomed bohemian lovers, Mimi and Rodolfo. Part of the Sunday Sunset Performance schedule, LA BOHEME will be presented on July 21st at 7.30 PM.

The Los Angeles Opera company's first production of the 2002- 2003 season has been firmed up. Puccini's THE GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST kicks off things Sept. 7-22, with Placido Domingo singing Dick Johnson on Sept. 4, 7, 10, 13 & 16 and Luis Lima replacing him on Sept. 19 and 22 mat. Catherine Malfitano sings Minnie; Falk Struckmann is Jack Rance and Anthony
Laciura, Nick. Gian-Carlo del Monaco conducts. Set in the Gold Rush era, the opera portrays a world of hardened men trying their luck in the just-opened American frontier. Puccini focuses on the saloon-owner Minnie and the band of cowboys and miners who frequent her establishment. When Minnie falls for a badman, Dick Johnson, jealousy overcomes Sheriff Jack Rance, who captures and threatens to hang his rival.
