The Los Angeles Opera company's first production of the 2002- 2003 season has been firmed up. Laciura, Nick. Gian-Carlo del Monaco conducts. Set in the Gold Rush era, the opera portrays a world of hardened men trying their luck in the just-opened American frontier. Puccini focuses on the saloon-owner Minnie and the band of cowboys and miners who frequent her establishment. When Minnie falls for a badman, Dick Johnson, jealousy overcomes Sheriff Jack Rance, who captures and threatens to hang his rival.
