DANCE AT THE MUSIC CENTER

LOS ANGELES -- The Music Center's first full dance season continues this spring with appearances by Shen Wei Dance Arts, Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and American Ballet Theatre. The season, the first in the Center's 39-year history, commenced last winter with appearances by San Francisco Ballet and Dance Theatre of Harlem.

In recent years, the Music Center has presented only intermittent concerts by such companies as Pilobolus, Diavolo and the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. But with the Los Angeles Philharmonic moving next door into Disney Hall, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion has been freed up for more opera and dance.

On March 19 & 20, Shen Wei Dance Arts' program includes the California premiere of Shen's Rite of Spring, to the four-hand version of the Stravinsky score. Filling out the bill is Shen's Folding, set to music of John Tavener overlaid with Tibetan chants.

Alvin Ailey takes over March 24-28, with three programs that include new works by Alonzo Knight, Dwight Rhoden, Robert Battle, plus Hymn, choreographed by Judith Jamison.

ABT is next up (April 1-10), offering Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet, and a mixed repertory including Within You Without You: A Tribute to George Harrison, choreographed by David Parsonns, Ann Reinking, Natalie Weir and Stanton Welch, and other works from its spring/fall 2003 season.
