LOS ANGELES OPERA KICKS OFF NEW SEASON

Los Angeles Opera's 2005-06 season is actively underway. Following on the heels of PAGLIACCI, starring the remarkable husband and wife team of Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu, L.A. Opera is preparing to launch a production of TOSCA by Giacomo Puccini, starring Violeta Urmana as Tosca, Salvatore Licitra as Cavaradossi and Samuel Ramey as Scarpia. Kent Nagano conducts, Ian Judge directs and the set and lights are by John Gunter and Maidie Rosengarden, respectively.

In January, a reprise production of MADAMA BUTTERFLY (also by Puccini) will be mounted, featuring Patricia Racette (Cio-Cio-San), Marcus Haddock (Pinkerton), Vladimir Chernov/Malcolm MacKenzie (Sharpless) and Margaret Thompson (Suzuki). The direction, design and lighting are by the much-esteemed Robert Wilson. Dan Ettinger conducts.

The rest of the season includes LA TRAVIATA, THE GRAND DUCHESS (directed by Hollywood legend Gary Marshall), PARSIFAL, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and GRENDEL, the world premiere of an opera by Elliot Goldenthal, directed by his wife, Julie (The Lion King) Taymor, who has also designed the puppetry and masks. The singers are Eric Owens, Richard Croft, Denyce Graves, Jay Hunter Morris and Laura Claycomb.
