BEIJING LIGHTS UP "THE WALL"

LOS ANGELES -- Beijing Modern Dance Co. will bring its production of REAR LIGHT to the Music Center, Mar. 4 & 5. Set to music from Pink Floyd's The Wall, the new ballet explores the world of the disaffected--a younger generation without aim or direction. Choreographed by Li Han-Zhong and Ma Bo, REAR LIGHT reflects a young Chinese generation struggling to reconcile its traditional culture with influences from abroad and a thirst for freedom.

Beijing Modern Dance Co. was founded in 1995 as an "independent" company under the leadership of the Beijing Cultural Bureau. It has gathered under its umbrella some of the top modern dancers in China and has over the past ten years built a team of outstanding choreographers.

BILL T. JONES/ARNIE ZANE WILL ALSO DANCE AT MUSIC CENTER The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Co. will celebrate its 20th anniversary April 2 & 3 when it mounts three pieces at the Music Center's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion: the new Mercy, plus 10x8 on a Circle and The Phantom Project: Still/ Here Looking On, a re-examination of the controversial 1994 Still/Here.

Jones/Zane's work has often been described as a fusion of dance and theater. The company's repertoire is highly diverse in subject matter, visual imagery, and length of each dance, ranging from fifteen minutes to two hours.
