SO-CAL SUMMER EVENTS
Music moves
outdoors (mostly) during summer in southern California. Some of the noteworthy
al fresco events include:
--Bramwell
Towey, who was recently named L.A. Philharmonic's principal guest conductor
at the Hollywood Bowl, will premiere his own composition, Urban Runway,
on July 8 (teamed with Orff's Carmina Burana).
--Esa-Pekka
Salonen will make his final appearance as the Phil's music director when
he conducts Mahler's Eighth at the Bowl, Sept. 9 & 11. (hollywoodbowl.com)
--On Aug.
8 & 10, Music Academy of the West will mount the West Coast premiere
of William Bolcom's comic opera, A Wedding (based on the Robert Altman
film). Indoors at the Academy's theatre in Santa Barbara. (musicacademy.org)
