SEVEN EVENINGS OF OPERA AT EIF

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND -- Seven opera productions are on tap at the 2012 Edinburgh International Festival during the months of August and September.

First up is Opera North's new version of Leos Janacek's THE MAKROPULOS CASE, directed by Tom Cairns, conducted by Richard Farnes. August 11 & 13 at Festival Theatre. Among the featured singers are Robert Hayward, Adrian Dwyer and Stephanie Corley.

After operas by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Richard Wagner and Henry Purcell, the season will conclude on Sept. 2 with a Scottish Opera production of Huw Watkins' IN THE LOCKED ROOM & GHOST PATROL. Another highlight of Scottish Opera's 4-part Festival participation is the world premiere of Craig Armstrong's THE LADY FROM THE SEA (29 August and 1 September at King's Theatre).

Adapted by Zoe Strachen from a play by Henrik Ibsen, THE LADY FROM THE SEA tells the story of Elida, daughter of a lighthouse-keeper, who lives a narrow life with a husband several years her senior. She is full of longing for the sea and for freedom, until the arrival of a mysterious stranger creates a storm that threatens to tear apart the whole family.

Armstrong, known for his scores for stage and cinema (Moulin Rouge), is a pioneering Scottish musician whose distinctive classical works have been praised for their delicacy and beauty.
