for July/August 2013 EDINBURGH NEWS AMERICAN LULU On Aug. 30 & 3l at King's Theatre, Scottish Opera and The Opera Group will present AMERICAN LULU, Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth's drastically revamped version of Alban Berg's unfinished 1934 opera, Lulu. Neuwirth has set the story in the 20th century, against the backdrop of the US civil rights struggles of the 1950s and 60s. This allows her to re-interpret Berg's score for a jazz-inspired, Las Vegas-style ensemble. The new production is conducted by modern-music specialist Gerry Cornelius and is directed by John Fulljames, with Angel Blue starring as Lulu.
