Classical Music News for January/February 2010:

MONDAY EVENING CONCERTS

LOS ANGELES -- Monday Evening Concerts continues its 2009/2010 season with adventurous chamber-music programs in January and February, 2010. On January 11 at Zipper Hall, the organization will present MOSTLY CALIFORNIAN, a showcase for such so-cal composers as Clint McCallum, Anton Webern, Milton Babbitt, Michael Pisaro and Luciano Chessa (one of whose pieces, Louganis, is dedicated to the famed Olympic diver, Greg Louganis).

On February 22 MEC will present CELEBRATING KAGEL, one of modern music's most significant, prolific and unclassifiable composers (he died in 2008). The concert highlights two sides of his humorous and dramatic work, which often shines a sceptical light on musical conventions. Dressur, Eine Brise: Transient Action For 111 Cyclists and Trio in Three Movements will be performed at Zipper Hall at the Colburn School, 200 S. Grand Ave.

For tickets and information call 310-836-6632 or visit mondayeveningconcerts.org.

The Goethe-Institut offers a series of Sunday Morning Films tied in with the music being heard at the MEC concerts. On February 21, for example, Ludwig Van: A Report, will be screened at 11 a.m. at the Institut. Directed by Mauricia Kagel, Ludwig Van is a surreal and imagined account of Beethoven visiting Bonn in 1970 to witness the celebration of his bicentenerary.

The Goethe-Institut is at 5750 Wilshire Blvd. Doors open at 10.30 a.m. for refreshments. Tickets available at door only, on a first come, first served basis. All foreign films have English subtitles.
