Classical
Music News for July/August 2012:
TWENTY MUSICAL EVENTS AT EDINBURGH
EDINBURGH,
SCOTLAND -- Twenty noteworthy celebrations of classical music will be
held in August & September at the 2012 Edinburgh International Festival.
Among the
highlights are four successive concerts in Usher Hall by the London Symphony
Orchestra, (Aug. 16-19), with Valery Gergiev conducting. Gergiev, the
Festival's honorary president, will concentrate on works by Brahms and
Szymanowski, including the latter's sumptuous Symphony No. 3, "Song
of the Night." Tenor Toby Spence, backed up by the Edinburgh Festival
Chorus, is the featured singer. (August 3rd at 7.30pm).
Gergiev
concludes his LSO festival residency on Sunday, Aug. 19 with the final
symphonic creations by both Brahms and Szymanowski. The latter's 4th Symphony
(with Denis Matsuev on piano, Leonidas Kavakos, violin) is known for its
percussive brilliance tempered by magical moments of lyrical reflection.
Brahms's
Symphony No. 4 is considered by many to be the summation of his orchestral
music.
The Festival's
concluding concert, Virgin Money Fireworks Concert, will take place at
Princes Street Gardens, Sunday Sept. 2 at 9pm. Garry Walker will conduct
the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in works by Walton, Williams and Prokofiev.
The concert, a feast of pageantry and patriotism, will not only celebrate
the Queen's Diamond Jubilee but echo the Festival's several Shakespearean
offerings.
