ALEXANDER NEVSKY

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND -- The opening concert of the 2013 Edinburgh International Festival will take place in Usher Hall on August 9 at 7.30 pm when the Royal Scottish National Orchestra performs Sergei Prokofiev's ALEXANDER NEVSKY
(Piano Concerto No. 3).

Conducted by Valery Gergiev, the concerto will feature pianist Danil Trifonov, mezzo soprano Yulia Matochkina, and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, led by Christopher Bell.

First composed as a film score, Prokofiev's concerto celebrates the battles and victories of medieval Russia.

THE MUSIC GUILD SUMMER FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED

The Music Guild’s Summer Festival begins on June 23. This is the fourteenth season of the popular series of “Coffee, Cookies and Concerts” held annually on Sunday afternoons at the University Synagogue on Sunset Boulevard in Brentwood.

This year’s series of four concerts begins with the Fiato String Quartet performing Haydn’s String Quartet in C Major, Op. 76, No. 3, Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major and Smetana’s String Quartet in E Minor.

The Music Guild’s Summer Festival in June, July and August is performed on Sunday afternoons at 3:00 P. M. for subscribers who prefer afternoons rather than evenings and for parents and grandparents to attend with their children and grandchildren. Refreshments (Peet’s© coffee and tea, cakes and cookies, cheese and crackers, strawberries and whipped cream and vegetables) are served before the concert and at intermission.

The 2012 series also features concerts by: the Piano Trio Celeste on July 14, the California String Quartet on August 4, and the Saguaro Piano Trio on August 25. Complete programs are listed on line at TheMusicGuild.org.
