Classical Music News for May/June 2020

Because of the current pandemic restrictions, L.A. Master Chorale has cancelled its May 17 recital of COME AWAY TO THE SKIES (A celebration of Alice Parker). Grant Gershon had been scheduled to conduct a 40-voiced ensemble. Works and arrangements were by the composer, arranger, educator, pianist and singer, Alice Parker.

The Master Chorale still hopes to mount, on June 13-14, Sergei Rachmaninoff's epic work, ALL-NIGHT VIGIL. Ten of the fifteen sections are based on the chants of the Russian Orthodox Church; in the other five sections the composer offers an evocative spiritual testament to his homeland.

As a demonstration of the full power, complexity, and majesty of the human voice, there is no better showcase than ALL-NIGHT VIGIL.

Grant Gershon conducts the 100-voiced choir a capella.

LA Master Chorale has also announced two new digital series:

SUNDAYS AT SEVEN is a weekly program offering audio broadcasts of complete concerts previously performed by the company at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Each broadcast will include an introduction by Grant Gershon and special guests, and will also include related content, such as program notes from the original programs.

OFFSTAGE WITH THE LA MASTER CHORALE is a weekly series of interviews, led by Gershon and Associate Conductor Jenny Wong of notable personages in the world of music and the performing arts, as well as Master Chorale singers.
Viewers can submit questions through social media channels. A recording of each OFFSTAGE episode will be shared on the Master Chorale's social media channels and website. Special guests include Reena Esmail, Morton Lauridsen, Anna Schubert and Peter Sellars.
