CONTRA-TIEMPO/LULU WASHINGTON DANCE THEATRE
The Wallis will highlight dance recitals by CONTRA-TIEMPO and LULU WASHINGTON
DANCE THEATRE this winter.
On Jan 17-18, CONTRA-TIEMPO, founded and directed by Ana Maria Alvarez,
will present joyUSjustUS, an new work that combines elements
of Salsa, Afro-Cuban, and urban dance styles. Alvarezs intent is
to reclaim the dominant, deficit-based narrative of people of color
in this country and flip it on its head by embodying stories of joy and
justice.
LULU WASHINGTON DANCE THEATRE will then take over the Bram Goldsmith stage,
Jan. 30-Feb 1, with a program that includes Fragments, Enough,
Message for My Peeps, Open Your Eyes, Reign
and Zayo.

The company focuses on using dance to explore social and humanitarian
issues, including aspects of African-American history, culture and life.
Having recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, LULU WASHINGTON DANCE
THEATRE has built an international reputation for the earthiness, vitality,
energy, and humanism of its repertory.
