L.A. MASTER CHORALE ANNOUNCES NEW SEASON
The Los Angeles Master Chorale's new season will commence with Haydn's
grand oratorio, THE CREATION, at 7 pm on Sunday, October 18, 2020. Depicting
the biblical creation story with texts from Genesis and "Paradise
Lost," the concert will be conducted by Grant Gershon and features
soprano Sarah Shafer, tenor Arnold Livingston Geis and bass Justin Hopkins.
Two more sacred texts, Handel's "Dixit Dominus" and Arvo Part's
"Te Deum," will be performed by the Chorale on Nov. 14-15.
To celebrate the holiday season, the Chorale will revisit "Festival
of Carols" on Dec. 5 & 12. On Sunday Dec. 6, the "Lo, How
a Rose" concert will pay tribute to the classic Christmas carol by
Michael Praetorius, a piece that depicts the nativity. Among several arrangements
of the carol is a version by composer Shawn Kirchner. The concert will
also include an interpretation by Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez and
new commissions by LA-based Filipino composer Saunder Choi and American
composer Dale Trumbore.
Handel's "Messiah" will be performed on Sunday, Dec. 20, with
a sing-along to follow on Monday, Dec. 21.
On Jan. 31, 2021, guest conductor Rollo Dilworth will lead "United
We Sing," a program that showcases the breadth and vitality of the
many shared cultures that make America what it is today. The music of
Dilworth, Michael David, Melissa Dunphy, Sidney Gauillaume, Rafael Hernandez,
Al McNeil, Alice Parker and Mary Lou Williams will be highlighted.
Associate conductor Jenny Wong will lead Reena Esmail's "I Rise:
Women in Song," which pays tribute to Emily Dickinson, Eleanor Roosevelt,
Maya Angelou and Arlene Geller. "I Rise" will be performed on
Sunday, March 14 and will also feature James MacMillan's "Stabat
Mater."
Closing out the 2020-2021 season is Bach's "B-Minor Mass," a
monumental testament to the composer's artistry. This performance will
feature the Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra and will take place at 2
pm on Saturday, May 8 and at 7pm on Sunday May 9.
Los Angeles Master Chorale performs in Disney Hall, 135 N. Grand Ave.
